“Iron” Mike Tyson underwent several rounds due to an ulcer problem during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, but was able to answer the call when the plane landed, according to his representatives.
“Fortunately, Mr. Tyson is doing great,” his publicist told the Daily News Monday. “He is grateful to the medical staff who were there to help him.”
The former heavyweight champion “experienced nausea and dizziness due to an ulcer about 30 minutes before takeoff” but has since recovered, his rep said.
Tyson’s team shot down reports that the 57-year-old boxer’s medical failure had caused a delay in boarding on Sunday, blaming the inconvenience on a related “air conditioning issue”.
Tyson is scheduled to fight 27-year-old YouTube influencer Jake Paul on July 20 in Texas. His managers said the premium fighter’s gastrointestinal problem will not affect that plan.
Critics expressed concern about the fight due to the 30-year age gap between the fighters.
Boxing Insider Promotions promoter Larry Goldberg said in March that there was no way the New York State Athletic Commission would allow such a show to take place in New York.
“Doctors would never sign off on this,” Goldberg said. “We couldn’t even offer anything like that here.”
Tyson retired from professional boxing in 2005, but He returned to the ring 2020 exhibition with fellow former champion Roy Jones Jr., which ended in a draw. His professional career included 50 wins and six losses. The Brooklynite won 44 matches by knockout.
