Compton standoff on 91 Freeway ends after CHP arrests suspect

COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) – A kidnapping suspect has been arrested after two long and strange standoffs at Paramount and Compton that caused major traffic jams Friday.

The suspect was arrested on the westbound 91 Freeway in Compton after California Highway Patrol officers surrounded his van and pulled him from the vehicle just before 7:50 p.m.

For more than an hour, the man refused to give up as his van was wedged between the officers and the freeway wall.

Before the standoff, CHP officers crashed into a van after the suspect led them on a brief chase with flat tires on 91.

After that, officers tried to get the suspect to surrender as traffic backed up on westbound 91. However, the suspect used a tire and cardboard to cover the broken passenger window to prevent officers from seeing him.

There appears to have been some communication between the suspect and the officers during the ordeal.

The standoff did not end until officers approached the van from both sides and pulled the suspect from the vehicle.

The incident began when a suspect accused of kidnapping a woman led authorities on a chase that ended in a standoff on the 710 Freeway in the Paramount area. The standoff caused the southbound 710 to be closed until 5 p.m
