The armed forces of the Russian Federation have used more than 800 cruise bombs to strike Ukraine in the past week, President Volodymyr Zelensky said last night. During the war in Ukraine, the president shared photos of Russian strikes on cities in the besieged country – Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Odessa, Sumy, Kherson, Donetsk and Kharkiv.

“This week alone, Russia has used more than 800 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine. Against our cities and communities, against our people, against everything that makes life normal,” he said on X.

He made the comments after Russia struck two of Ukraine’s largest cities yesterday, with missile fragments hitting a residential building on the outskirts of Kiev and a guided bomb killing one person in Kharkiv. An eight-month-old baby was injured in an explosion in Kharkiv, officials said.

Mr Zelensky renewed calls for more remote weapons after seven people were killed in a Russian attack the previous day.

Western allies have already supplied Ukraine with long-range weapons – including Scalp missiles from France, Storm Shadow from the UK and ATACMS from the US – as well as US-made Patriot air defense systems.

Russia claims it shot down 36 Ukrainian jets that were launched at night

Russian air defense systems have destroyed 36 drones launched by Ukraine in three regions bordering Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said this morning.

According to the ministry, at least 18 planes were shot down in the Bryansk region in the west of Russia, nine were destroyed in the Kursk region, south of Bryansk, and nine in the Belgorod region, in the south.

The governors of Bryansk and Kursk regions said on Telegram that no one was injured or caused major damage as a result of the attacks. Russian officials often do not disclose the damage caused by the Ukrainian attacks.

While Kiev does not normally comment on these attacks, it claims that the attacks on Russian military, transport and energy infrastructure are a response to Moscow’s continuous attacks on Ukrainian territory since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ukrainians imprisoned in Russia for years are returning to Kyiv

Ten Ukrainians who had been imprisoned for years were released from Russian captivity on Friday through the mediation of the Vatican, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Part of the group arrived overnight by helicopter at Kyiv International Airport, which has been closed since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. This was the first time in the last two years that the airport received passengers. The rest of the group arrived by bus.

A child was injured as a result of the Russian attack on the two largest cities of Ukraine, Kyiv and Kharkiv

Russia claims to have captured two villages in Donetsk, Ukraine
