Record-breaking swimmer appointed as Charnwood’s new mayor – Latest News – News

The open water swimming world record holder was sworn in as Sharnwood’s mayor for 2024-25 at the council’s annual meeting.

Cllr Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE, who has been a borough councilor since 2011, said it was a proud moment to be appointed as the borough’s first citizen at Loughborough Town Hall on Monday 13 May.

Cllr Bradshaw will represent Charnwood at hundreds of events over the next year and will be supported by Mayor Julie Ellerbeck.

The Mayor of Charnwood said: “It is a hugely proud moment to be appointed as Mayor of this great borough and I look forward to representing Charnwood over the next 12 months.

“What makes it special is the appointment as Charnwood’s 50th Mayore year and it will be an honor to meet so many different people who are doing so much in our community.”

The Mayor’s chosen charities for his year as Mayor are Living Without Violence and Dogs Trust Loughborough.

Cllr Bradshaw was born in Blackpool, Lancashire and moved to Loughborough to study PE, Sports Science and History at Loughborough University in 1983. He then completed a PGCE followed by a Master of Science degree.

Since then, Charnwood resident Cllr Bradshaw has gone on to teach at a number of schools in the area. He lectured at Loughborough University for over 16 years before becoming a psychotherapist and life coach in 2000.

Cllr Bradshaw has a keen sporting interest and has completed many long distance and marathon swims.

At the age of 15, the mayor swam solo across the English Channel and in 2002 set a new and current world record for his solo butterfly swim across the channel, while raising thousands of pounds for charity. She also completed the fastest documented female butterfly solo swim of 28.5 miles across Manhattan Island in the US in 2011.

In 2006, Cllr Bradshaw was awarded an MBE after being named in the New Year’s Honors List for services to swimming and charity and also received an honorary doctorate from Loughborough University in the same year.

Cllr Bradshaw’s appointment sees the end of a mayoral year for Cllr Margaret Smidovich.

Cllr Smidowicz said: “It has been a great honor to represent Charnwood over the past year and there have been 50e Mayor of this wonderful district.

“I have made fantastic memories, meeting hundreds of residents across the borough, celebrating the centenary of the Loughborough War Memorial, Carillon Tower, opening the Loughborough Exhibition and attending services including Remembrance Sunday.

“It was nice to meet and thank our volunteers who do a lot in the township.

“I would also like to thank everyone who raised money for my chosen charity, Men and Women Indoors and Head and Neck Cancer Awareness, Swallows and Cancer Self Help Group, Loughborough.

“I wish Cllr Bradshaw all the best in his mayoral year, which I’m sure he will thoroughly enjoy.”

Claire David Northage was elected Deputy Mayor and will be supported by Deputy Mayor Jenny Northage.
