Potentially better Internet coverage in your neighborhood is the goal of a proposed project that will be presented to the Kewaunee County Board on Tuesday. Scott Feldt of Bag Tussell met with the finance and procurement committee and the executive committee this month to discuss plans to improve the county’s broadband network. The two parties have been working together since their efforts helped secure the first Wisconsin Public Service Commission grant in 2018. Feldt says Bug Tucell is looking to expand its broadband network in Kewaunee County by extending the “middle mile,” the area’s fiber backbone. connection. Extending the middle mile will allow Bag Toocell to build more towers and bring fiber to homes to better connect the community. Feldt’s proposal would also expand coverage in Dyckesville. Bug Tussell is seeking about $6 million in transportation financing from Kewaunee County so that private companies, nonprofits and public entities can raise funds through tax-exempt municipal bonds. Bag Tussell would assume the debt and make all the payments for the project. At last week’s executive committee meeting, Feldt said the only risk to the country would be if Bug Tussell and its parent company were attacked.
Feldt and the committee discussed some of the concerns raised in conversations at other council meetings, including the use of subcontractors, lack of service in some areas and the length of its funding agreement.
Kewaunee County Council will also consider the use of opioid settlement funds and a Homeland Security exercise grant when it meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Kewaunee.
