Some reaction now from the London race, where Labour’s Sadiq Khan won a third term.
Conservative MP Paul Scully said his party ran an “incredibly unbeatable campaign” in the capital and “gifted” Khan with victory.
Scully is a former London minister and also ran unsuccessfully as a Conservative mayoral candidate.
He told BBC News that the party had run an “anti-Khan campaign” and that “there’s only so far you can join people pointing the finger, ‘I don’t like this guy.’
He referred to Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen, who won re-election on Friday, as someone who has a “positive vision … doing different things, getting his local people involved”.
However, he also said there should be no “talk about what happens to the Prime Minister” after the local election results – and that “it would be a shame if we started rolling the dice for something else”.
