Major rivers, waterways and reservoirs in China’s Guangdong province are at risk of dangerous flooding, prompting the government on Sunday to launch emergency response plans to protect more than 127 million people.
Calling the situation “severe,” local meteorological officials said stretches of rivers and tributaries in the Sician and Beijiang basins were dropping to a rare rise in water levels, only one in 50 to occur in any given year, the state broadcaster said. CCTV News reported on Sunday.
China’s Ministry of Water Resources issued an emergency advisory, CCTV reported.
Guangdong officials have urged departments in all localities and municipalities to start emergency planning to prevent natural disasters and to immediately disperse disaster relief funds and materials so that victims can have food, clothing, water and shelter.
The province, a major exporter and one of China’s main commercial and trade hubs, has been hit by heavy rain and strong winds for several days due to severe convective weather that has also affected other parts of China.
